b.1988, Wuhan, China
Wang Wang is an independent artist who studied at the renowned Carrara Academy of Fine Arts in Italy in 2013, majoring in installation art (Decorazione). During his time abroad, Wang expanded his artistic range, focusing on installation art while also exploring contemporary and classical oil painting techniques in 2013 and 2014. This cross-disciplinary approach allowed him to merge contemporary experimentation with the fine texture and precision of classical painting in his works. After returning to China in 2018, he skillfully combined these two styles and began to develop a more diverse artistic practice.
Wang Wang has an extensive exhibition history. In 2015, his works were included in a group exhibition in Bologna, marking his growing presence in the international art scene. In 2016, his installation works Raggaza and Maze garnered attention. The former used coffee as a medium, while the latter, constructed from wood, reflected his deep insights into materials and space. In 2023, Wang Wang’s works were showcased at the Wuhan Art Expo, further cementing his position in the Chinese art community. In 2024, he will hold a solo exhibition at Cub Gallery, titled Fruit Series, marking a significant turning point in his artistic career. Additionally, Wang Wang has collaborated with several well-known brands, including Young Beast Store, Giordano, and Rich Bar, demonstrating his innovative ability to collaborate across industries and his wide-reaching influence.
In his artist statement, Wang Wang reflects on his theme Mountain | Water, which has long inspired a series of works. Though the number of pieces may be few, his desire to express this theme has remained strong. He recalls spending a week in the mountains, allowing himself to relax and wander freely, capturing the natural scenery while feeling a deep sense of peace, detached from the chaos of the world. He describes nature as the most precious gift in life—where a ray of sunshine, a flower, or a mountain can heal us. He emphasizes that while we are constantly being healed, we often fail to pause and truly feel these moments amidst our busy lives.
Wang Wang's time in the mountains led him to a new realization about simplicity in art: "The greatest realization that the mountains and water bring me is 'the way is in simplicity.' A few brushstrokes can depict a mountain or water. This is something I had never experienced before." In his earlier works, he had focused too much on details, neglecting the deeper emotional resonance. This new approach to minimalism represents a new level of artistic understanding. He compares this to the concept of a single ink dot on a white piece of paper, which can also be a powerful form of artistic expression—an interpretation of simplicity.
He believes that art is a projection of the artist, and the depth of an artist's understanding directly influences their work. Unlike dance, which requires precise movements, or competitive sports, which are defined by measurable success, art is a personal journey where technical skill serves as the foundation. Mastery of technique lays the groundwork, but true artistic expression comes from an artist's understanding of life, knowledge, and the world. Each artist’s path is unique, and this individuality is what makes art profound.
